New Finishline officers have been elected and the schedule for the XC season has been announced.  Overnight trips to the Clara Bowl, the Memphis Twilight Meet, the Chile-Pepper Invitational, and the McCallie Invitational are planned.  Hotel information is HERE.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (11/08/2008)

What a day! Rain threatening and a cold wind blowing. The Bucs came in an underdog and ran well, but had to see Mountain Brook take both Blue Trophies.  The Boys finished second, led by Nick Perkins, who finished 6th at 16:05.  Pat McGregor and Bryan Propst finished 8th and 11th, respectively.  Hanna Sharrow led the girls to a seventh place finish.  Many of the guys and girls set Personal Bests on the course.

SECTIONALS !!!  (10/30/2008)

A great afternoon for running saw both the boys and girls teams qualify for the State Championships.  The boys, once again led by Pat and Nick, won the sectional over Oak Mountain and Vestavia Hills.  The Girls finished second to Oak Mountain.  Hannah Sharrow was periously close to her PR as she led the Bucs.

The HOOVER INVITATIONAL (10/23/2008)

The Bucs had another really good afternoon, Thursday, in the cold and wind.  The Boys team won the 6A race, with McGregor, Perkins, and Propst finishing 1-2-3 in times that were among the top 10 ever run by a Buc at the course in Veterans' Park (15:58, 16:22, and 16:36). The Girls finished 5th, led by Hanna Sharrow,who finished in 21:09.  Next week it's sectionals - at our home course!

The ARKANSAS CHILE-PEPPER FESTIVAL (10/18/2008)

The Bucs traveled long-distance to Fayetteville, AK, to compete against a national field in the Chile-Pepper Festival.  The Boys ran extremely well, paced by Pat McGregor and Nick Perkins (3rd at 15:26 and 5th at 15:28).  The Boys finished 5th behind several nationally ranked teams (55 teams total).  The Girls finished 10th in a field of 39 teams, led this time by Alyssa Stites in 20:20.60 (fastest time by a lady-Buc this year by .01 seconds!).

GREAT AMERICAN CROSS COUNTRY FESTIVAL (10/11/2008)

Another great day for running greated the Bucs as they hosted the Great American Cross Country Festival for the third time.  Many top runners and teams in the Southeast and the nation joined Hoover at Veteran's Park.  The Boys team placed 3rd in the Race of Champions, led by Pat McGregor (4th at 16:08) and Nick Perkins (5th at 16:09). Bryan Propst also turned in the 10th best time for a Hoover runner on our Home Course, with a 16:48, finishing 22nd.  The Boys defeated two of the top 10 teams in the Southeast and one of the "Bubble teams" as well.  The Girls were led again by Hannah Sharrow, who finished in 21:38.  THANKS to all the HOOVER PARENTS, STUDENTS, and ATHLETES for their help in making this a successful and fun event for our many guests!

JESSE OWENS INVITATIONAL (10/4/2008)

On a beautiful day in upper Alabama, the Bucs raced against 16 boys' teams and 19 girls' teams.  The Boys finished 6th, led by Nick Perkins (who finished 5th with a 16:01). The girls finished 8th, led by Hanna Sharrow (who fiished 15th and reset her PR for this course with a 20:20).  The JV teams fared better against heavy competition.  The JV Boys finished 3rd and were led by Will Gambla, Connor Ford, and Josh Box (who finished 2nd, 3rd, and 5th, respectively). The Girls JV took 4th, led by Alyssa Cummings, who finished 9th.

MOUNTAIN BROOK INVITATIONAL (9/27/2008- Barber Motorsports Park, Leeds, AL)

A warm, but not too muggy day greeted our runners at the Barber Motorsports Park.  With the roaring of racing motorcycles in the background, the Buccaneers dealt with a tough (but very well laid out) course, which included a one-mile uphill start.  The boys finished fifth, in a very close competition and were lead again by Nick Perkins.  Perkins finished second, with a time of 16:30.  The girls finished a respectable 4th, led again by Hannah Sharrow, who ran a 22:01.

McCALLIE INVITATIONAL (09/20/2008)

Hoover Boys had a good showing in a small meet at McCallie, finishing second, led by Nick Perkins who finished 2nd overall.  Hannah Sharrow again led the girls, finishing 15th.

MEMPHIS TWILIGHT (09/13/2008)     

In this large meet, the Hoover Boys finished 4th of 36 teams.  Pat McGregor led the way, winning the race with a 15:58.  The Girls finished 6th out of 28 teams, with Hannah Sharrow leading the team and finishing 15th out of 239 runners.

 

TUESDAY TWO-MILE TUSSLE (9/9/08)

Race conditions were very warm and muggy, but the course was in good shape. The Bucs Girls and Guys each won their races against light competition, with the Girls scoring 34 points and the guys scoring 17 points.  Nick Perkins won the Boys race with a swift 10:29.7, and Hanna Sharrow was second in the Girls race with 13:15.1!

CLARA BOWL (9/6/08 - Boys Top 10 Only)

The Bucs defense of their title went well, with the boys having the lowest time for the top-five runners, but scoring went otherwise and they finished 3rd.  They got to see a little of their competition as Mountain Brook won the event with 134 points to our Bucs 148.  Patrick McGregor won the race with a time of 15:50 and Nick Perkins finished 4th, with a time of 16:18.

CHICKASAW TRAILS (9/6/08 - everyone else)

The Girls varsity team finished 5th in the large schools division with 151 points behind Auburn (127) and Oak Mountain (146).  The Boys B team finished 13th in the large schools division.

OAK MOUNTAIN INVITATIONAL AT HEARDMONT PARK 9/2/08

Conditions at Heardmont Park were muggy and crowded, with water levels lower than expected.  Competition was very good, and the meet was well attended both with runners and spectators. The varsity boys won convincingly, scoring 19 points. Nick Perkins won the race pulling away with a 16:57.5.  The varsity girls took second place (after a scoring error was corrected in Oak Mountain's favor).  Hannah Sharrow finished 6th with a quick 22:31.3. The JV boys finished tied for first with Oak Mountain, but were awarded second when the 6th runners' scores were considered. The results have been posted on the schedule page.

18-HOUR RELAY / FUNDRAISER

The 18-Hour relay and fund raiser was run Friday 8/15/08 at the Mary Birdwell Track at Hoover High School.  Our Buccaneers ran in pairs handing off the baton every mile all evening, through the night and the early morning.  Thanks to everyone, coaches parents, and runners for helping this happen!

A REALLY BIG THANK YOU to all the folks who helped with the USATF Junior Olympics meet on July 9-12th!  We raised beaucoodles of $$ for the school and our kids - more at the first cross country meeting.  Our athletes were great both on the track and helping out.  Thanks also to the Hoover Belles, CC's Pizza, and Jim & Nick's BBQ.

 

STATE MULTI-EVENT CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Decathlon and Heptathlon finals were held on May 12 & 13, 2008, at Hoover High.  70 Boys and 40 girls participated in the competition. Congratulations to Anthony May for a terrific 2nd Place finish in the Decathlon, and to Krystine Peak for a 9th place finish.  Congratulations also to Thomas Marbury and freshmen Jessica Shelley and Bryan Propst for participating in the grueling competition!

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The OUTDOOR Varsity teams have brought home two Red trophies from Gulf Shores and the Freshmen teams brought home two All-Metro Championship trophies! 

The Boys' varsity team was nipped in the final triple jump to finish 2 points behind Vestavia.  It was a great battle between the teams all weekend!  Anthony May broke the State Meet Record with a high jump of 7' 00.75" jump!  Madison Brown and Matthew Braswell each broke the school records in the Javelin, and the Boys 4 x 400 team (the Fantastic Four plus 1) broke the school record for the second week in a row.

The Girls' varsity team finished with a very respectable second place behind the distance powerhouse of Mtn. Brook.

6A SECTIONAL QUALIFYING

Hoover had an amazing sectional this year, qualifying at least one competitor in every event on the Boys side and qualifying at least one girl in every event save two (the 400m and the 800m Dashes).  All the relay teams qualified, and several athletes qualified first in the State.  Hoover finished ahead of Vestavia Hills for first in the boys qualifying and behind Mountain Brook for second in the girls qualifying.  Now it is on to State!

Metro South Freshman Championships

The Freshman Girls pulled out a tight, but very well earned, victory over Mountain Brook and the Freshmen Boys worked to a rare tie for first place with Vestavia Hills.  The Freshman Boys 4x800 team broke the school record with a 8:39.84.

Hoover Optimist Relays

Both Boys and Girls teams battled impressively, breaking six team records.  Brionne Williams set a new school mark in the high jump (5' 8") and the Boys Distance Medley and Speed Medley teams set new records.  The girls set both varsity and freshman records in the Distance Medley, and Ahmad Martin broke the freshman record with the 1.6 kg discus (131' 11"). 

Mountain Brook Invitational

A very fine showing by the Buccaneers had the Boys finishing 1st, paced by Anthony May and JD Barnette, who won the High Jump and 300 meter hurdles, respectively.  The girls placed 2nd, paced by Krystine Peak, who won the Long Jump!

By the way, Pat McGregor was missing from Mountain Brook because he was in Arcadia, California, placing 2nd in the mile run with a blistering 4:15!  Poor Griff Graves missed the chance to avenge his loss to Pat in the 3200 in indoor this year.

Mobile Challenge of Champions:

In the rain, the times on Saturday were still very good.  On Friday Matthew Braswell led the way with a new school record in the Javelin.  Both Brionne Williams and Anthony May tied the school records in the High Jump.  Results are linked on the Schedule Page.

Sugar Bowl Invitational:

Congratulations to the Boys team for a well-earned victory!  The Girls also finished 2nd!  Congratulations to Anthony May and Brionne Williams for equaling the school Records in the High Jump.  Photos from the trip are in the photo gallery.

Nike Indoor Nationals:

Nike Indoor Nationals run 03-15&16-2008 in Landover, Maryland.  The results are posted on the indoor schedule page.  Congratulations to Pat McGregor, who ran a 4:16.79 to finish 2nd in the nation!

 

King of the Mountain Invitational Results:

The meet was nearly snowed out, and the Freshmen had to take the day off due to the cold.  The results, such as they are, are posted on the schedule page.

Congratulations to Anthony May for setting a new school record in the Outdoor High Jump at 6' 10"!!  Congratulations, too, to Laura Bedsole for setting a new school record in the Pole Vault of 11' 0"!!

University of Kentucky High School Invitational - Feb. 23, 2008

Congratulations to Nicole Muldowney, Laura Bedsole, and Brionne Williams for Setting or tying School Records.  The Boys won the 4x800 Relay and Pat McGregor finished a few tenths of a second behind Robert Bedsole's mile record - an impressive showing!

 

2007 XC & Track Reunion - Photos taken by our own Tom Neil are now in the photo gallery.  Great photos Tom and thanks!  The reunion was a huge success!  Many thanks to Deborah Warren and Coach Hind for organizing and planning it.  Thanks to Bill Evans for many, many hours researching records and results.  Thanks to Jim Pugh, Bill Evans, Coach Hind, and the many athletes that helped build the wall of fame.  And thanks to all of the former coaches and athletes that helped track down team mates and photos of our champs.

CROSS-COUNTRY MEET SYNOPSES:

NTN SOUTHEAST REGIONAL:

In the Southeast Regional, the Boys finished 5th and the girls finished 9th against elite competion from 8 other states. Pat McGregor finished 2nd, running 16:11.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS:

And the results are in:  The Boys Team earned the Blue Trophy defeating a very talented field and scoring 56 points while the top five averaged 16:11.66 with a 56 second spread 1st to 5th.  Pat McGregor finished first with a 15:38.2 and Nick Perkins finished 4th with a 15:54.9. The Girls brought home the Red Trophy in an equally talented field, finishing 2nd, scoring 71 points with the top five averaging 19:19.56.  Nicole Muldowney finished 5th in 18:39.6 and Nicole finished in 18:55.2. An excellent showing by all the runners with many PRs.

Section 4 Qualifier:

The Boys and Girls teams swept the Section 4 qualifier held at our home course in surprisingly warm conditions.  Nick Perkins placed first in section with a 16:34.7.  Nicole and Kimberly finished 2-3 with 19:53.7 and 20:01.7, respectively. Congratulations to both Teams, and it's on to State in search of more trophies!!

Hoover Invitational:

In muddy conditions, our home course played even tougher, but the Varsity Boys held on and finished 1st!  Nick Perkins won the Boys race with a 16:35. The Varsity Girls improved their positions a bit against Mountain Brook and Scottsboro while finishing 3rd.  Nicole finished 3rd with a 19:16. So many runners competed in the varsity races - for those coveted 8th - 10th positions - that the JV teams finished 3rd (boys) and 5th (girls).  Coach Hind will announce who gets those sectional competition slots this week.

 

Hewitt-Trussville Husky Challenge:

WOW!  Times on this, the fastest of the courses we'll run on this year, were outstanding!  Even with the re-rate to 4939m, the times were sensational.  The Varsity Boys won their race, with the Varsity Girls finishing second to Mountain Brook.  The JV teams reversed the finish with the Girls edging out Mountain Brook and the Boys finished second to Walton (Ga.).  Pat McGregor and Nick Perkins finished 1-2 with a 14:58 and a 15:12, respectively.  Nicole finished 3rd with a 17:45, and Kmberly finished 6th with an 18:06!  That's really moving!

Great American Cross Country Festival:

Results have been posted.  A very successful meet - well received by the thousands who participated and watched.  The Varsity Boys took 4th (up from 18th last year) and the Varsity Girls finished 9th (up from 19th last year).  Both the school and course records fell in the Boys race.

Jesse Owens Classic:

The Bucs were at top form in Oakville, with the Varsity Boys taking 1st and the Varsity Girls finishing 2nd.  One of the best showings ever for Hoover!  Pat won with a 15:48 and Nick Perkns finished 4th with a 16:05 in the Boys Elite Race.

TCBY Invitational:

The Bucs were the class of the event (although our hosts were even classier) as both the Varsity teams finished 1st.  Nick Perkins won the Boys Race with a 15:54, and Nicole Muldowney won the Girls Race with an 18:58.

McCallie Invitational Results:

Well Done Bucs!  Both the Boys and Girls Squads finished 2nd. Pat McGregor finished 4th over all in the Boys race, and Nicole Muldowney finished 2nd overall in the girls race.  Check out how the rest of the Bucs fared - click the underlined event on the schedule page.

SPAIN PARK INVITATIONAL RESULTS:

The rest of Hoover was at Spain Park.  The Girls varsity finished 1st and the Boys varsity finished 2nd. Results have been posted.  Lea Breithaupt finished 5th in the Girls Race, and Ben Willis finished 4th in the Boys Race.

SMITHS STATION RESULTS:

HOORAY for HOOVER! In the Large Schools Division, both the Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls took 1st over the Hosts and over Auburn.  Pat McGregor tossed out a blistering 15:35!  Nick Perkins finished 4th with a 16:08. Nicole and Kimberly Muldowney finshed 1-2, Jill Cowart finished 4th, and Laura Smith finished 5th. The JV teams also did very well with the Girls winning the 3K and the Boys finishing 2nd!

CHICKASAW TRAILS RESULTS:

In the 5A-6A Competition, the Boys again took 1st over Mountain Brook (47 to 97) and the Girls took 2nd (behind Mountain Brook, 27 to 79).  The boys had an average time of 16:42.41 and the Girls 20:23.11 - Excellent!  Pat McGregor won the boys race with a 15:56.

CLARA BOWL RESULTS:

In the elite competition, the Boys took 1st and the Girls took 2nd.  Results have been posted here; just click the event name on the schedules page!

 

The Hoover Boys and Girls teams, steeped in a trophy-filled tradition, look to improve on last year's finish (Girls 2nd, Boys 4th).

Molly McGregor will also need photos for use in the XC and Track Year Book.  This is a highlight of the year and is cherished by the athletes.  Please help her get photos of every athlete - all the photos provided to Steve for the website will be forwarded to Molly, so you can kill two birds with one stone.
