2009 Hoover High School Outdoor Track

(with a few indoor flavors)

OUTDOOR TRACK SEASON IS HERE !!!

The first day of practice is January 23, 2009.  The Bucs are attempting to better their red-trophy finish of last year!  The schedule page is updated.  Hoover is hosting two meets for middle school students, a freshmen/JV meet, the freshmen/JV championships, and two varsity meets this year.  Trips are planned to New Orleans and Mobile (as well as an Indoor event in Boston, Mass.).

Reebok Boston Indoor Games (February 7, 2009)

As a continuation of his great senior year, Patrick McGregor traveled to Boston to participate in the Reebock Indoor Games, running in the indoor mile.  On this small track, Pat ran the 16+ laps in a new school record time of 4:09.41 for the mile.  That equates to 4:08.96 for the 1600 meters.  Pat finished third.  A link to the race results is on the 2009 Indoor Track Schedule page.

University of Kentucky Indoor Invitational Meet (February 21, 2009)

As a warm up to the season a few athletes traveled to Lexington, KY, for an Indoor meet.  A link to the results is on the 2009 Indoor Season Schedules page.  There were 4 new Hoover records set in the meet.  Congratulations to Maudrecus and Breona Humphrey for resetting the Freshman Girls and Varsity Boys 400 meter records and to Anthony May and Brionne Williams for setting the Varsity Boys and Girls High Jump records!

OAK MOUNTAIN ICE BREAKER (February 28, 2009)

Hoover athlete Patrick McGregor travelled to Boston, Ma. for the indoor mile, and he finished second in 4:08.61, breaking the Hoover indoor 1600m record in the process.  Patrick gets credit for a 4:07.17 for the 1600m.  Well done Patrick!!

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY RELAYS (March 27 & 28, 2009)

Hoover Athletes traveled to Tallahasse, Florida, to compete in this regional invitational, with many teams from all over the South and a few from the Northeast.  Despite some wet conditions, the team performed very well with many noteworthy performances: Brionne Williams and Anthony May won the high jump events and Laura Bedsole won the pole vault.  Emmanuel Camacho won the shot put and Phillip Pritchett won the 100m dash. Nicole Charley and Brian Jackson finished second in the triple jump and Jessica Shelley finshed second in the 100m hurdles.  The girls 4x200m relay won, and their 4x100m and distance medley relays finished second.  The boys distance medley team won, and their 4x200m relay also finished second.

HOMEWOOD INVITATIONAL (March 28, 2009)

Not all of the Hoover team went south to Florida.  Several athletes competed at the Homewood Invitational.  The meet was postponed for four hours due to weather and the field events and track were wet. The boys team finished fourth and the girls finished tenth. Antonio Gaylord won the discus, and Matthew Braswell won the Javelin.

Mobile Challenge of Champions (April 3 & 4, 2009)

On a windy pair of days, Hoover athletes made a very good showing.  Chalandra Gooden set a new school record in the 200 meter dash - a record that had stood for 28 years.  Breona Humphrey reset the school record in the 400m, and the girls 4 x 100m freshman relay team reset that records, too.  Bryan Probst won the open division mile, and Patrick McGregor won the invitational division mile.

MOUNTAIN BROOK INVITATIONAL (April 10 & 11, 2009)

What a great meet.  Both the boys and the girls won the competition, with everyone contributing to some very big wins.  The girls edged Mountain Brook and St. Paul's, as well as Collins Hill from Georgia.  The Boys swept everyone away winning by more than 140 points.  See the results page for more.

Freshman/JV Championships (Hoover Track - April 14, 2009)

What a beautiful (if chilly) night.  The Boys and Girls teams won their respective contests over the area JV and Freshman teams.  The freshman girls 4 x 400 team broke an eleven year old record with a 4:14.65 time.  Several Hoover athletes won and there were Personal Records tied and set in many events.

HOOVER RELAYS (Hoover Track - April 18, 2009)

(Synopsis in the works)

SECTIONAL QUALIFYING MEET (Mountain Brook - April 24 & 25, 2009)

An extremely good event overall for the Bucs. The Boys won with 238 points, and the Girls finished second with 164.5 points.  The Boys had at least one qualifier in 16 of the 18 events.  The Girls had qualifiers in 15 of the 18 events.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (Gulf Shores Sports Complex, May 8 & 9, 2009)

Due to inclement weather, the meet was postponed one week!  No matter, Hoover was dominating, with nine state champions.  The Boys won (152 Points!!), the Girls placed second (89.5 Points!).
